About PTA Legislation and Advocacy

LMS PTSA provides a healthy community for Lincoln students, teachers, and families. But it is also a child advocacy organization and a member of larger PTAs at the school district (PTA Council), state, and national levels.  PTA’s advocacy mission is to speak on behalf of all children and youth at all these levels.

One of PTA’s purposes is “to secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.” PTA promotes and encourages legislative advocacy for the education and welfare of all children and youth.

Role of PTA in Legislation

California State PTA takes positions on issues of concern and legislation based on position statements in the California State PTA Toolkit, California State PTA resolutions, California State PTA Legislation Platform and National PTA positions and resolutions.

At a local level, PTA legislative advocacy chairs are responsible for demonstrating leadership on children’s issues. Their role is to educate PTA members, community members and elected officials about PTA’s issues of concern and legislative priorities and goals.

Lincoln’s Legislative Advocacy Team

Lincoln’s PTSA Legislation Chair provides PTSA members with information about PTA positions on current legislation and issues.  This position is currently open. If you are interested in the role or in helping on the Legislation Committee, we would love to hear from you!

Please contact PTSA President, Hanny Patel for more information.

No amount of fundraising can have as much impact on our school as a single piece of legislation.  We always welcome members interested in joining our Legislative Advocacy Team.  Thanks for your support!

Current Legislative Issues

California PTA tracks and takes positions on all California bills that will have an effect of California’s children.

California PTA also hosts monthly webinars to discuss the latest information on legislation issues. For webinar information, and to find the latest on legislative issues, see: https://capta.org/focus-areas/advocacy/

Highlights from the 2021 California State PTA Legislative Conference

PTA leaders from across the state participated in the 2021 virtual conference. The 2021 theme was A Path to Equity. This two-day event provides PTA advocates with the background, resources, and contacts to advocate for issues that impact the well-being of children and families. The 2021 theme was well-timed, as legislatures in Sacramento, Washington, D.C., and beyond are tackling equity issues head-on.

Elected officials value input from parents on issues that affect children. If one or more of the issues below is important to you, please contact your representatives and let them know how you feel. Here is the link to find the elected officials near you (for Lincoln’s area, it’s Sen. Ben Allen and Rep. Richard Bloom).

Highlights include:

  • California AB14: for deployment of broadband infrastructure to California’s underserved communities to bridge the digital divide.
  • California SB4: will amend the California Advanced Services Fund to make communities eligible for grants based on broadband need, making it easier for local governments to fund their internet infrastructure.
  • California SB224: would require schools to provide age-appropriate mental health education, providing students with understanding of the principles of mental health.
